Focusing on the BRICS expansion, Experts Jointly Explore the Future of BRICS Cooperation at the Symposium

On the morning of February 1st, a symposium titled "The Impact and Prospects of the Expansion of the BRICS Cooperation Mechanism" was held in Beijing, hosted by the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation (AITEC). Yu Zirong, Deputy Director of AITEC, and Huang Feng, Executive Deputy Director of the Office of Xiamen Leading Group for BRICS PartNIR Innovation Center (BPIC), attended the meeting and delivered speeches.

Yu Zirong stated that the BRICS cooperation is currently at a pivotal juncture of leveraging past achievements to unlock forthcoming opportunities. Therefore, it is of great significance to strengthen relevant research, offering suggestions to promote practical cooperation in various fields and the development of BRICS high-quality partnerships. Against this backdrop, AITEC established the "BRICS Economic and Trade Cooperation Research Center" in November 2023, and this symposium is the first meeting held since the establishment of this center.

Huang Feng stated that in the past year of 2023, the construction of BPIC has been accelerating with external exchanges expanding from "cloud communication" to “face-to-face” exchanges. Standing at a new starting point of cooperation, the construction of BPIC faces new opportunities and challenges. This year, the BPIC will work to promote the construction of the China-BRICS and Innovation Incubation Park for the New Era, explore the establishment of the BRICS Innovation Research Institute, and establish overseas cooperation platforms for BPIC. It is hoped that experts from various fields will provide guidance and jointly contribute to the construction of the bases.

Xu Xiujun, Director of the division of International Politics Theory at the Institute of World Economics and Politics of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Wang Cheng, Deputy Director of the West Asia and Africa Department of the Ministry of Commerce, Wang Youxin, a senior researcher at the Bank of China Research Institute, Xu Feibiao, Director of the Center for BRICS and G20 at the China Institutes of Modern International Relations, Yue Yunxia, Director of the Latin American Economic Research Office at the Latin American Institute of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Wang Lei, Director of the BRICS Research Cooperation Center at Beijing Normal University, and Yuan Xiaohui, Deputy Director of the West Asia and Africa Research Institute of the Academy of the Ministry of Commerce, spoke and discussed topics such as the characteristics, facts, and theoretical considerations of BRICS expansion, opportunities and challenges for deepening economic and trade cooperation between China and new BRICS members, the potential for industrial cooperation and financial support strategies after expansion, the significance of the BRICS mechanism for the global South, and the prospects for cooperation in Latin America.

Recently, the Office of Xiamen Leading Group for BRICS PartNIR Innovation Center and the BRICS Economic and Trade Cooperation Research Center of the Academy of the Ministry of Commerce signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement and jointly carried out special topic research on "China's industrial cooperation with new BRICS member countries." The topic will summarize and sort out the macroeconomic development of new BRICS member countries, leading industries, and the current state of industrial cooperation with China, analyze key challenges faced by cooperation, and propose favorable conditions and policy recommendations for industrial cooperation between China and new BRICS member countries.
