    Main achievementThe Moscow Declaration was released. Affected by COVID-19, the 12th summit was convened via video conferencing. BRICS leaders discussed the plan for COVID-19 cooperation. They stressed the need to strengthen cooperation in vaccines and medicines and the BRICS economic partnership, reaffirm adherence to multilateralism, and reinvigorate and reform the multilateral system.

    Major achievements:The Brasilia Declaration was issued, covering issues such as stronger cooperation in scientific and technological innovation, digital economy, and combat against organized crime. The highlights of the Brasilia Summit include a focus on innovative development and cooperation in science and technology, the establishment of the iBRICS, and the adoption of the New Architecture on Science, Technology, and Innovation.

    ThemeBRICS in Africa: Collaboration for Inclusive Growth and Shared Prosperity in the Fourth Industrial Revolution

    Major achievements:The 10th BRICS Summit Johannesburg Declaration was issued, covering topics such as the international political and economic landscape, the Fourth Industrial Revolution, global governance, and international development. Besides, a series of meetings were hosted, including an informal meeting to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the BRICS Summit, the BRICS Leaders-Africa Dialogue Forum, and the Dialogue of Emerging Market and Developing Countries.

    ThemeBRICS: Stronger Partnership for a Brighter Future

    Major achievements:The BRICS Leaders Xiamen Declaration was issued. The framework for partnership in the three pillars of policy and security, economy and finance, and culture and people-to-people exchanges was established. The first "Golden Decade" of BRICS cooperation yielded fruitful results and experience, comprehensive outlining the blueprint of BRICS cooperation and opening the chapter of the second "Golden Decade". During the Xiamen BRICS Summit, the Dialogue of Emerging Markets and Developing Countries was held in an innovative way based on the "BRICS Plus" model.

    ThemeBuilding Responsive, Inclusive, and Collective Solutions

    Major achievements:The Goa Declaration and Action Plan were made, reaffirming the strengthening of BRICS partnership and BRICS cooperation in areas such as counter-terrorism and people-to-people exchanges. A dialogue was held between BRICS and the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC).

    ThemeBRICS Partnership–a Powerful Factor of Global Development

    Major achievements:The 2015 Ufa Declaration and 2015 Ufa Action Plan were released. Decisions were made to further strengthen BRICS cooperation in the field of strategic security. The Strategy for BRICS Economic Partnership was adopted. The medium- and long-term development priorities of BRICS were identified. Meanwhile, dialogue meetings with other parties were hosted, such as SCO members and observer states, the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU), invited heads of state, and invited heads of international organizations.

    ThemeInclusive Growth: Sustainable Solutions

    Major achievements:The Fortaleza Declaration was issued, covering topics such as global political and economic landscape, sustainable development, and inclusive growth. The greatest achievements were the formal announcement of the establishment of NDB headquartered in Shanghai, China, and the signing of the Treaty for the Establishment of a BRICS Contingent Reserve Arrangement. On the sidelines of the summit, BRICS leaders had a dialogue with leaders of South American countries.

    ThemeBRICS and Africa: Partnership for Development, Integration and Industrialization

    Major achievements:The eThekwini Declaration and Action Plan were issued. The decision has been made to establish the NDB and Foreign Exchange Reserves. The founding of the BRICS Business Council and BRICS Think Tanks Council was announced. New action plans for cooperation have been formulated in nearly 20 fields, including finance, economic and trade, science and technology, health, agriculture, and humanities. The first BRICS Leaders-Africa Dialogue Forum was convened to promote the establishment of a partnership for development, integration, and industrialization between BRICS and Africa.

    Major achievements:The Delhi Declaration and Action Plan were released, covering major issues such as the global economic landscape, global governance and sustainable development, and regional and global hotspot issues. The possibility of establishing the NDB was discussed at the summit.

    Theme Broad Vision, Shared Prosperity

    Major achievements:The Sanya Declaration was issued, covering major issues such as the world economic landscape, reform of the international monetary and financial systems and financial regulation, international development, and BRICS Action Plan. The highlight of the summit was the induction of South Africa into BRICS. BRICS members drew up detailed plans for future BRICS cooperation. Decisions were made to deepen exchanges and cooperation in finance, think tanks, business communities, science and technology, and energy and increase the voice and representation of emerging economies and developing countries in global governance.

    ThemeBRIC cooperation vision and global governance, international economic and financial affairs, international trade, global development and international poverty reduction, energy, climate change, counter-terrorism, and the alliance of civilizations.

    Major achievements:The 2nd BRIC Summit of Heads of State and Government: Joint Statement was issued. The BRICS cooperation agenda was further planned, with exchanges and cooperation being further advanced. The BRICS cooperation mechanism was gradually stabilized. The Memorandum on BRICS Inter-Bank Cooperation Mechanism was signed, marking the official establishment of such a mechanism.

  • 1st BRIC Summit

    June 2009

    Yekaterinburg, Russia

    Themeinternational financial crisis, reform of international financial institutions, food security, energy security, climate change, and future direction of BRIC.

    Major achievements:The Joint Statement of the BRIC Countries' Leaders and the BRIC Joint Statement on Global Food Safety were issued, marking the formal upgrade of BRIC cooperation to a summit. Afterward, BRICS Members Started Cooperation Institution Building, setting up a series of mechanisms such as the Meeting of the BRICS High Representatives for Security Issues, the Meeting of the BRICS Ministers of Foreign Affairs, and the Meeting of Permanent Envoys to Multilateral Institutions.
